Assistive Technology Legal Definition:

Assistive technology is

...any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilitites of a child with a disability. (The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, IDEA: PL 94-142)

 While this definition addresses all disabilities, OSB specializes in the devies that address the needs of the students who are blind and visually impaired.

Today, as never before, students who are blind and visually impaired use many types of assistive technology devices to increase their independence. Assistive technology gives students who are blind and visually impaired equal access to information (both print and electronic) needed to be successful in the classroom, home and workplace. Here at Oklahoma School for the Blid, many of our students use these devices on a daily basis.
