The Oklahoma School for the Blind

Cheerleading is for 7-12th grade students. The team consists of any student who wants to try cheerleading. Out of the students interested in Cheerleading, a competitive team is chosen. The competition team can have up to 6 members who are willing to work hard and learn.

• The team creates a routine of cheers, stunts, dance and/or stomps.
• This competition team will compete at the South Central Association of Schools for the Blind (SCASB) Cheer competition each year.
• Oklahoma's team competes against 5 other schools: Alabama School for the Blind, Georgia Academy for the Blind, Louisiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Mississippi School for the Blind and Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
• Two other opportunities exist for competition at SCASB. One cheerleader may create their own unique routine and present it at SCASB as the Individual or Outstanding Cheerleader. This cheerleader will take the mat alone and work towards earning the top spot.
• The second opportunity is the team mascot. The team mascot can wear our Panther suit and create their own unique routine. The mascot also takes the mat to do their own routine alone to vie for the top spot at SCASB.

OSB participates in the Oklahoma Special Olympics. In the Fall, we practice our Bowling skills at the local bowling alley.

• Other sports we may try in the Fall would be Cornhole and Horseshoes. In the Spring, we practice bocce and athletics. The sports we compete in most often are Bowling and Athletics. Athletics includes running events and some field events like standing long jump and softball throw.
• Our Special Olympics area name is Cherokee Country. Cherokee Country holds most competitions on days we are not in school therefore Kiamichi Country allows us to join them for their Bowling and Athletics. Kiamichi Country competitions are typically held during the school week and we love to visit with their teams!
• Every three years a new Medical release must be filled out by families for the Special Olympian to participate. For the 2022-23 school year, each member will need a new medical release on file. Track is for students in the 7-12th grade. The team can consist of up to 12 girls and 12 boys per school team.

• Each student can enter either 3 field 2 track events or 2 field 3 track events. Field and track events vary depending on the classification of the student's visual impairment.
• Those who have the most vision loss must wear a blindfold while approaching the event, while participating in the event, and until released from the event. These athletes are classified as class A. Class A events are as follows: 60m, 400m, 800m dash; shot put, standing long jump, standing high jump, standing triple jump, 200m shuttle.
• Students who do not have the most severe vision loss are classified as class B/C. Class B/C events are as follows: 100m, 400m, 800m, 1500m dash, 400m, 1600m relay; shot put, running high jump, running long jump, running triple jump, 200m shuttle.

The Oklahoma School for the Blind wrestling program is designed to promote physical activity, confidence, being a team member and develop character traits that will assist them in the future.

• OSB competes against other visually impaired schools as well as local public schools.
• OSB competes annually in the South Central Association of Schools for the Blind (SCASB).
• SCASB includes Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, Texas and Oklahoma.
• Wrestling is offered at the elementary, middle school and high school levels.
