Outreach coordinators travel around the state to assist families, public school staff and other organizations having contact with children with visual impairments. Resources, suggestion, consultation and supportive services are available upon request.

Eligibility

Children ages infancy - 21

Visually Impaired Vision 20/70 in best eye with best correction

Visual Field less than 20 degrees

Visual Impairment that significantly affects the child's educational performance

Evaluations are conducted on campus for children with visual impairments (from infancy to age 21) who do not attend the Oklahoma School for the Blind. The evaluation team is composed of staff members who have expertise in several areas:

Academics (math, reading, achievement)

Braille reading and writing

Early childhood development

Independent Living Skills

Intellectual functioning

Orientation and Mobility

Speech and Language

Vision

Occupational & Physical Therapy

Evaluations are administered at no charge. If requested families and professionals are provided lodging and meals during their stay on campus. A written report is provided to the school districts and parents following the evaluation, which describes the child's current level of functioning, eligibility for services and educational needs.
