Orientation & Mobility

Dr. Richard Larson, Ms. Gina Woods Mrs. Rene Miller

Orientation & mobility instruction is a vital component in the education of all visually impaired students. At the Oklahoma School for the Blind, this instruction is provided by three certified mobility specialists, Richard Larson, Gina Woods and Rene Miller. Blind students are taught the specific cane techniques which allow them to detect objects in their path, as well as steps and other drop-offs. They are taught how to cross streets safely and how to plan routes and to remain oriented so they can travel to a store or a friend's house independently, without having to wait until it is convenient for others to take them to their desired destination. Low vision students also receive instruction in mobility so they can learn to cross streets safely in situations where they cannot see the traffic signals and so they can learn to travel with maximum efficiency by making good use of whatever vision they have and by learning to remain oriented in all types of settings, both outdoors and indoors.

It has been said, in regard to blind and visually impaired persons, that the ability to get around by oneself is just as important for success on a job as the ability to perform the actual work. It is the goal of the mobility department at the Oklahoma School for the Blind to give the school's students the skills which enable them to travel independently so they can live full and satisfying lives, both in the workplace and in the other areas of life.
